Dear P.S. 10 and K280 Families,
You may have been following news stories about traces of lead in schools’ drinking water. We wanted to give you an update on water at P.S. 10 and K280.
Last month, P.S. 10’s and K280’s water was tested for safety. Sinks and water fountains throughout the school were checked. In P.S. 10, of the 110 water samples taken, only one was found to have elevated levels of lead. That one sample was from a newly installed sink that was connected to a different outside water pipe than the main water line that brings water to the rest of P.S. 10. That sink has been disabled. In K280, the two samples found to have elevated levels of lead were from a science room that is currently not in use.
We’ll continue to follow the protocol developed by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. You can see the results of our most recent water test, and read more about school water safety in general, at http://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/schools/watersafety. For information about household water safety, including instructions for getting New York City’s household free water testing kit, please go to http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/drinking_water/lead_index.shtml
If you have any questions about P.S. 10’s or K280’s water, please let us know.
Very truly yours,
